Miss Dorothy- better job on the lipstick- though maybe go a little over your own lips to bring out your lips even more. Hard to see from back row.

Natalie- really good job on your asian eyes tonight!

Christian, I like the makeup look on you! I think it could go even further, but you did a good job!

Sidney- your blonde wig looks so much better now, yay!

Everyone else great job!

Seriously you are all doing a fantastic job, I'm so happy- usually I have tons of notes but you guys and gals have really hit the ground running with the makeup and most important you are listening and I love, adore, and treasure that!!! Seriously THANK YOU and break legs tomorrow night! You're all so frickin awesome!!

Thursday, May 1 - 2nd Preview

Notes from Craig:

My bullet points didn't paste in, so really read these well!  Nice work tonight!

Act one
Vince/Skylar - I know we discussed backing the portal one and two 2x2 frames with Luan and paint them black on the inside, but what if they are backed with muslin and we down lit them as well? I know this takes four of of the LEDs we were going to add to the backlight for the cyc, but it might be very pretty. Thoughts? I really need those in by tomorrow night no matter what we do. The actors need them, and I want them in for photos. Let's discuss first thing tomorrow. Thanks!
Matt - work overture again - horns need help/repetition
Vince - Dowser for the projector
Costumes - Fedora for Evan in opening
All - Head snaps in the opening number were super sloppy
Placement of Sidney/Cristian/Gio - further down stage for raise your skirts and bob your hair
Bands are getting jazzier - diction clean - sharp moves
Costumes - Fix Millie's hat for the top - looks pinned in the back
I'm sorry Tracy - I just really do not like the white coat on Jimmy - he looks like he is a doctor Ina lab coat from the back row
Jimmy - check your collar after your change
Jimmy - they stole your shoe? Don't laugh until after, " while I was wearing it!"
Anthony - can you meet with me at 6pm? Character work.
Used to girls who can't pay - not a joke to you - he is making a comment on deadbeat actresses
Matt - work the underscore for Millie so we hit right on the music
So they're actresses - talk to me about this - don't forget
Matt - I need a musical cue on Mrs Meers' first entrance - I have an idea
Dani - Rose with the rooster - super dramatic acting mode - think Diane Wiess from Bullets Over Broadway - "don't speak!"
Mrs Meers close door on entrance if there is no curtain
Props - Can Meers fan be a different color - I'm losing it against her costume - maybe it is blood red Chinese fabric
Millie - be excited - build to losing the job - let it be more of a surprise when you don't get it
Vince - Black masking flats - paint needs to be touched up
Millie - New idea - we could be very good for each for each other
Nice ladies - How the other half!
Millie - hold for laugh after " my first poor person" then - Hey! I am broke
Millie - The classifieds - romantic
Meers - I love the fan - it is becoming almost like you get a Hot flash thinking about them being orphans
Work the elevator - lights, etc when the electronics are ready

Trevor - hair - a little more volume
Costumes - I like Trevor's new vest, but don't like the dark navy color - he is getting too dark
Trevor - during speed test - Get your hands out from behind your back
Costumes - Three of the stenogs have the same neck tie - can they all be different?
Trevor - Hold for that applause after you throw the paper at end of the fastest part
Stenogs and all - slower arms up on the "ahs" so you arrive right before the pose
Stenogs - final speed test pose - left hand to hip, with right hand fist in the air

Laura - can you pull the bench off stage after you open jail cell
Hillary and Laura - vocally - see me for some work - right after vocal warm ups
Meers - let a little air in between Millie's line and "not if you really rub it in"
Matt tempo on intro into the top of only on New York seems super fast
Costumes - Can we get Vanessa special shoes for the muzzy costume? Black isn't working

Jimmy - Poison pen - don't indicate the pen and paper
Adam/Sylvia - Push the set out on Millie's final lyrics -  "I might say"
Matt - orchestra cannot leave the pit any other way than by the door. They cannot use the stairs on either side of the stage to cross the stage - they must go out the front entrance for intermission break.

Act 2
Adam/Cristian/Sylvia - set pieces really need to move faster all the way around. If you are close to the spike - leave it and get off stage - you cannot second guess or hesitate!
Sylvia (preset note) Sincere Trust/Cafe Society piece was preset wrong at the top of the show
Props - Shorten Millie's phone - we need to get one of our candlestick phones from Donahue and shorten it so I can see her face over it
Costumes - The costume is a bit wrong for Millie top of 2 - too feminine - this is the strong woman anthem of the play and she looks like Miss Dorothy. Can we turn that dress into something that is more in lone with how tough the rest of the girls look?
Stenogs - in "Forget About the Boy" - Hallelujah - held all the way through
Evan - don't talk oven the applause - the phone rang eleven times...

Millie - react to the Trevor asking her to dinner
All - just know that we will be taking production Photos tomorrow
Natalie - do the step like Joe does it in Muquon - ask me about it
Costumes - What is on the back of Millie's red dress? It looks like a satin shark fin
Work the green glass scene with muzzy and Millie

After vocal warm ups we will Set curtain call - with Matt and orchestra
Energy - you have to really pick it up!

Make sure you see me tomorrow if I have asked you to - this is your responsibility!

Thanks for all your amazing talents and hard work!

- Craig

Make-up Notes from Lani: (Wed 4/30)

Joey- perhaps too pale pf foundation tonight, the most noticeable was your jawline- maybe blend the highlight a bit more. Towards the end of the show it got better. (but that's just a Lani being picky note haha)

I need to fix Sidney's wig again. I will take it home and curl it.

Millie- your pink bows look darling!!

Nicole, can you please use a darker lipstick? Compared to everyone else it looks like you aren't wearing any. Please use a little darker color, Here's an example of a color that would look good:
I would go for a color close to the ripe cherry or pink crush.

Meers- Great job on makeup tonight :)

Flannery- love the wig and the pencils and paper clips haha you look great!

Millie- LOVE the white comb clip bow in your hair for the speak easy. Adorable! Maybe bobby pin it as well so it doesn't fall out like it did tonight. Also, for the speak easy, I still liked that pinkish flower in your hair, but put it on your right side of your head and just nix the headband- since it's too tight and your hair is so slippery hehe. But you looked beautiful!

Millie: I realized I didn't put this note in here sooner- I need you to darken your eye brows with eye brow pencil, brown in color- lost your eyes brows entirely in the back row.

Christian- make will be done tomorrow, yes? I need to see how you put your makeup for the show.

Evan: I still could use more blush- however I was sitting in the back row. I don't want you looking silly to anyone else sitting closer, so keep your blush at the level it was tonight- I could still see it, but it seemed fainter than I expected it to be.

Vanessa: The Muzzy hair curls on your cheeks can be even thicker, as it wider on your face. It should match the thickness of your side burns. But I can see that you're doing them :) Yay, thank you! Also, perhaps a little darker on the age lines- couldn't see them from the back row. Maybe they were blended too much?

Everyone else- great job! You are all getting a real good hang of the makeup and hair, and I REALLY appreciate your efforts and compliance with this. You are all truly looking really spectacular!! And you sound BEAUTIFUL :)

  • Evan - Mic placement on Miss Dorothy seems to be too far out in front of her mouth – I have ordered more of the other mics – they will be here tomorrow and we should go back to them for the people who the Countryman style isn’t working for.  Make sure your batteries are charged  - ALWAYS!
  • Evan - Push the ensemble just a bit hotter in the big numbers – these people sing great together – I want to hear that beautiful blend!

  • Trevor and Miss Dorothy - Reset each time you sing guys in ah sweet mystery – see me I will show you what I mean

  • Work ledge moving on and off – Sylvia, Adam, Jimmy (jimmy should be able to ride it)

MAKE-UP NOTES FROM LANI (Tues 4/29)

So I didn't actually have a ton of notes for tonight's run- for the most part everyone looked pretty good- these were some of the notes that I did take:

Need to brush out millie's long wig, and tack sew millie's big straw thatched hat to her wig so it stays.

Still need to curl the ends of Sidney's blond wig.

Muzzy needs to draw on Hair curls at side burns (she'd rather draw them on then try to fuss with her hair so much.) thicker.

Foundations were much better tonight :)

Meers- foundation still a touch too dark, really cover entire face thickly with highlight and then apply blush etc- ease up on the cheek contour if need be to achieve that more pale look.

Natalie good job on the "asian" eyes.

Evan- still looks pale/washed out onstage, more blush perhaps?

Nicole- the black wig looks great! :)

Need to put pencils and other brick a brack in Flannery wig and tidy it up so it doesn't get so messy.

Everyone else- keep doing what you're doing cause it's looking great!

Thanks everyone!! I'm so proud and happy about this production I could just cry- you are all doing really great work and you have a super entertaining show!
<3 you all!

Monday, April 28 - 1st Dress
Notes from Craig:
Act one
Millie - the ticket has to go in the pit when you throw it
Run the opening with orchestra
Joe - all walkers - please come from portal two as newspaper guy
Work the Priscilla girl scene
Ethel show the newspaper when you hand it to Meers so we get that she is taking it away because you might recognize her from her picture.
Meers - Fon mou young - Dorothy not Ethel
Nicole you have to hit center line when you land the desk on entrance to speed test.
Alice and Ruth - slow down - diction and volume!
Matt - cue for top of they don't know
Like eve and the apple - out with the audience on this line
I never even played a drunk scene - Gio ask me about this line.
Gloria - vocally too low in your register and quiet. She seems bored - but in a real way, not theatrically bored - talk to me and I'll be more specific
Rework end of song - What do I need with love - my blocking sucks!
Millie - Really great... guide - make a joke - don't cross away at that point
Work the Rodney stuff in
Cocktail table didn't get set.
Millie - Hit the dress lower for the spot on Dorothy Parker
Work the muzzy party
Is a stiff isn't he - a jab at her - not angry
Economize this scene with Millie and Jimmy - work this at 6pm
Did jimmy feel slow?
Cristian you cannot sit in the first wing to watch the show - I can see you

Act 2
Flannery  - My Barney... - didn't hear it
Work the kicking out of Jimmy
Miss Dorothy - tame the tiger - I have an idea for some fun there
Evan and Dorothy - work with me on song for a bit tonight
Millie - you introduced Nicole to Trevor as Miss Dorothy Parker!?
You could make the moon and the stars behave - awesome - you are so funny
And John - flowers - paint how beautiful is all will be so Millie's heart breaks over and over
Graydon - you have to wear your jacket or you need
Anthony - take care of yourself - your voice clearly needs rest outside of rehearsals
Nicole and Evan - make time tonight in pre- show prep to vocally work notes at end of both songs
Trevor - wear jacket
Kidnapping - serious - not for the laugh
Vanessa -  can Dani take wig off to reveal you, or are you just wig capped?
Work the sheets tonight pre show.

Nice work everyone - a huge step forward. There will be a schedule posted on the call board when you arrive - please follow it.

MAKE-UP NOTES FROM LANI (Mon, 4/28)

-Millie long wig looked great- just brush it through and maybe pin out of face and shoulders a bit more.
-Rebekah's real hair looks good for the rest of the show- but need to get bangs off of eye brows! Is it possible to either have her bangs get trimmed even more, or we'd have to mildly curl the bangs to get them higher.
-Rebekah's makeup was good :)
-Sidney's wig (blonde, straight) needs to be curled at the ends, or maybe tucked or pinned somehow to shorten the length- looks a little too 1960s.
-Need to get a wig for Nicole for whenever she's not Miss Dorothy- she sticks out too much with just the braids :/
-Adam's contour (character shadow) was not blended enough, and his highlight was too hot (too bright) this was an error on my part, as I put the makeup on him. I will instruct him on blending it more. He also could have more blush.
-Anthony, add more blush- especially at intermission- not a ton more, but a little- as the show progressed your blush faded. Also, need darker eye brows badly :)
-Evan- need a darker eye brow color- you looked like you had no eye brows on stage :( And blush- please use even more!
-Joey, you did your eyes very well, great job- you looked very cute on stage! Please add just a bit more blush :)
-Natalie, the grey eye shadow looked AMAZING in the opening number and for your other characters- but for Bunny Foo we need to have a gentler color so your eye slits stand out more. Maybe a very soft pink, or brown? I'd love to actually do your eyes tomorrow night so I can play around with it and see if I can get the look Craig and I want for them :) Otherwise, awesome! That dark lipstick looks STUNNING in the opening! Also, your bangs were a bit too overwhelming of your eye brows- any chance you could brush bangs to one side in a swoop like style while still brushing the side burns etc forward?
-Hillary, looking great throughout the whole show. It seemed that your hair deflated a bit as the show progressed, and thus you looked slightly more 30s style or 40s, but it's still workable. Great job!
-Dani- you need you be waaaaay more pale. And your lipstick needs to be darker.
-Vanessa, your foundation seemed too pale- do you have a darker color? The first time you were Muzzy I couldn't see any age lines on you at all, and the second time I saw them but had a difficult time spotting them. I would love to troubleshoot this with you, if possible. Also, when you are Muzzy, you need to draw on the hair circles, since we can't actually do it with your hair- lets trouble shoot that as well. Could use a touch more blush on you too.
-Gio, your hair looked great through whole show :) but your foundation was too pale.. please darken it.
-Shari, your foundation was too light, please darken it. Also, for Flannery I couldn't see your age lines- if you did them they need to be darker. Craig and I like your wig and I will be touching it up and finding pencils and junk to put in it. Also, if the wig has a group of strands that fall out, please pin it- there shouldn't be anything hanging in your face. You hair for the rest of the show was just fine :)
-Nicole, your foundation was much too light, please darken it. And your eye lashes made a strange shadow appear under eyes eyes many times during the show. Perhaps switch to the other eye lashes? Also- we will be getting a bow to put in the back of your wig, and if some hair from the wig falls into your face, please pin it back so it doesn't do that. :) Could also use more diffused blush on your cheeks- could hardly see it, and your eye brows need to be a touch darker.
-Laura, you looked adorable, but as the show progressed your hair poofed a bit more than I'd like- can you brush it or smooth it down after dance numbers etc? Also, please darken your lash line (top), and add some more blush (just a little)

You all did great for a first dress, great job!
Some things to keep in mind- please bring bobby pins (girls), hairspray, gel, hair ties, and makeup (preferably makeup designated for use under theatre lights) The student kits for Ben Nye are not that great- so please, please please, if you can not afford the big kits, then I would strongly suggest to invest in buying the individual "cake palettes"- by this I mean go to disguise the limit, get (1) Foundation 1 or 2 shades darker than your actual skin tone. And (1) Character Shadow, and (1) Highlight. I know it can be confusing to know which foundation to get, but the best way I can think to describe it is go 1 or 2 skin tones darker than your natural skin tone. For example I am pretty darn fair skinned, but I use the "creamy peach" foundation from ben nye. I will give an example here:
Note the color chart below. My skin tone is more like Ultra Beige- BUT for stage makeup I wear the creamy peach. So if you are light like I am, you might consider going for something near the creamy peach color. Or if you're medium toned, say creamy peach area, you might consider using the natural fair or something similar. The image below doesn't show the full range of colors- but disguise the limit has sample colors so you can legitimately pick 1 or 2 tones darker.
I know it may not make sense to you, to use a darker foundation than your actual skin tone, but there's something you must understand when it comes to stage makeup- this isn't everyday makeup. This makeup is meant to be under very intensely bright lights. Those lights wash you out, unless you wear the proper makeup colors. By wearing a darker color on your face you will even out your tone so when those lights are on you your face will match the rest of you. And I know that still might not make sense to anyone, but I promise I'm not trying to make you all look silly- that is the last thing I want to do. Please understand there's reason behind my logic.
As for the student kits- they are not great make up, and I will tell you why. They are cheap. They become muddy in color under the lights. They run easily, and are too light for many people. For the same amount of money (practically) you could buy a foundation, character shadow, and highlight from disguise the limit. (DO NOT LISTEN to the associates at disguise the limit if they try to sell you a foundation that matches your skin tone. Get one that's a little darker.)
This is an image of the individual cake palettes:

Here's what a character shadow cake looks like:

and here is what the highlight looks like
Blushes you can buy at any cvs or riteaid for rather inexpensively, less than $4
Eye brow pencils can also be bought at cvs for $2 or under.
And lastly, you'll need powder and you can get that at either disguise the limit:
Or cvs/other stores: Just look for "translucent" in the description.
Revlon ColorStay Pressed Powder Translucent 880
Special note here for any who do not want to get Ben Nye strictly because of the potential for clogged pores, skin sensitivity, or breakouts etc, Ben Nye also runs a line of water activated makeup which is specifically for designed for sensitive skin.
All you have to do is add a little water to the cake palette or sponge and apply.
And if you don't like Ben nye- there's others that work great under theatre lights as well.
Those brands are: Kryolan, Mehron. I am sure there are others specifically designed for
stage but I have yet to come across them.

If any of you have any questions you can always call, text, facebook message, or email me, or Janelle who is also helping with the design of this show's make up and hair. We are very happy
to do our best to answer anything you may ponder on :)
Warmest Regards,
Lani
